Like Paul Weller, Rick Parfitt was also born in Woking. He said that all he was interested in while growing up was sport. He was school high jump champion, cross country champion and the star of the football team. He hated school and often played truant and one day poor ol’ Rick was nutted for trying to chat up another’s boy’s girlfriend.
Midge Ure was another Glaswegian, born and raised in a one room council flat in an old tenement block that he shared with his mum, dad, brother and sister for ten years. He remembered getting beaten up a lot because he was small, ‘but I soon rebelled against that.’ He said he wanted to be like Gerry and the Pacemakers, ‘until the Monkees and Small Faces came along.’
Terry Hall’s Testament Of Youth appeared in issue 3 of Flexipop!, a time when everyone who participated gave us a photo of themselves when they were young. In common with nearly everyone else who agreed to talk about their lives as children, Terry hated school. In Terry’s case he went to extreme lengths to avoid going by throwing himself off a wall in order to break his arm. It didn’t work.
